Our 1-year-olds will experience the most growth and development at our school. They are fascinated by the world around them and love to get messy! Our Sunflower teachers create an environment safe for our littlest friends to explore and experiment with a variety of materials. Interesting and unconventional materials lead to more sustained attention and ongoing back-and-forth "serve and return" interactions with teachers. This may look like fun, but it's serious business building these little brains! (Ok... it's also pretty darn fun!) Welcome to Sunflower.
Our Sunflower friends love to feel different textures and experiment with color mixing. These busy littles are happiest when they are digging into slimy shaving cream, squeezing squishy kinetic sand, or popping bubble wrap! Sunflower Teachers, Ms. Erica and Ms. Dreka, use the opportunity to expand kids' vocabulary, narrating children's experience throughout.
Even the littlest friends enjoy mark making! While they may not understand symbolic representation yet, these are pre-writing skills that prime children for future drawing and writing!
Every time the Sunflower Teachers tried to tape something to the walls or tables, Sunflower children seemed fascinated by the tape. They wanted to pull tape up, feel the stickiness, and stick it to other surfaces. Rather than fight it, their teachers ran with the idea! Imagine the children's surprise when one of the walls in their classroom was covered with some of their favorite items, held on with tape!
All of the Early Partners children love books! Sometimes, children want to sit to page through independently. Here, Ms. Erica sits with them to responding to their pointing with words. Research says that responding to the gestures of infants and toddlers is one big way to support their language development.
