With older children (3-years-old), we continue to focus on social emotional learning and a language development, with a stronger focus on conceptual development. Teachers integrate developmentally appropriate strategies (e.g. phonological awareness) seamlessly into a child-centered approach, that builds the foundation for live long learning. Ms. Ana and Ms. Ta'Jah are especially skilled at building a classroom community where children work collaboratively. Ms. Ana is also fluent in French and will often incorporate French songs into morning circle time. Welcome to Hibiscus.
We are fortunate to have nearly a city block's worth of outdoor space for children to explore. Sometimes, teachers bring creatures inside for examination. (Don't worry- they are always returned to their natural habitat!)
A large paper, markers, and photos of an erupting volcano inspired several children in the Hibiscus class to do a collaborative work of art. This large erupting volcano is now the anchor to a dramatic-play center that is transforming into a prehistoric land of adventure. The coolest part? Kids owned this project from start to finish!
Here, children are invited to join teachers in a small group setting to create a dinosaur habitat out of open-ended materials, including a mix of natural and human-made items. Small group allows teachers and children to engage in deeper dialogue about concepts related to the study, and provides more space for children to explain their thinking as they work.
Rather than requiring children to follow rigid schedules or strict activities, our teachers create an environment rich with opportunities to explore and learn. Teachers closely observe the interests of their students and provide stimuli to open doors to children's learning.
